Herd Sharing

Some friends and I have talked about sharing a cow for a while now....  Our plan was to keep it in one friend's barn and each of us take turns milking and feeding her.  In a cute apron of course.  We thought of the wholesomeness of organic milk with no hormones.  Add to that, you need raw milk to make cheese.  Pasteurized milk just doesn't work.  Then we starting thinking of what ifs.  What if the roads are bad,  what if one of us wants out,  what if she (the cow) gets sick.....  What started out as an idyllic vision of us all being farm girls began looking more like a lot of trouble.  So we all decided to stick with chickens for now.
Then I found a wonderful solution.  Herd Sharing with an organic dairy farmer.  This is how it works.  I bought a share of a dairy cow.  The farmer takes care of her, feeds milks her, and replaces her if she dies or stops producing milk.  Once a week a friend picks up the milk and brings it to her farm market where I pick it up in a plastic jug.  I bring it home, put it into cute glass bottles and wait for the cream to rise.  Then I ladle the cream into a jar.  Next I pour myself a glass of cold milk, grab a couple of cookies and sit down.  Exhausting, I know.  Diana

What is This!

Ron has a stereo in his barn that is housed in our old entertainment center.  Since I don't use it, I don't pay much attention to it, until the other day when I passed it and then noticed something different.Nestled between the two speakers was a huge pile of stuff that looked organized.  That's right, it is a nest.....talk about having noisy neighbors!

Here They Come!

I wish I had used my video to catch this but I always forget my camera can do videos......  Here are the chickens running across the pasture to see me as I walk towards the hen house.  Have you ever seen a chicken run?  Hilarious.  So awkward looking.

But today I didn't have a treat for them so they quickly lost interest in me and went back to looking for bugs and tender shoots.Silly chickens.

Golden Harvest

Oh how I love our bees!Look what they can do.....make loads of sweet honey!  And we tried something new this year.  To prevent fermetation we brought the honey to a temperature that killed the yeast (but not the good stuff) before bottling.  We got about 70 pounds and hope to get one more harvest later this summer!  Diana

Abby's Art Show

Abby had some artwork displayed at a very special gallery this past month.  The pieces were actioned off to fund the Education Foundation and Abby was one of a very few artists whose work was chosen to be presented.  This first piece is now ours and will be at the cabin.  It is a water color of a richly colored sunset over a grove of pines.

I could not afford this second piece.  The gentleman who bought it introduced himself to Abby and said he thought it was very pretty.

The gallery was set up at the school and was beautifully catered.

We were also treated to music as we enjoyed the art.  Such a classy, classical evening.  I should have dressed better...........  Diana

Utica Ice Cream Festival

Last Saturday was the annual Ice Cream Festival in Utica, Ohio!  We NEVER MISS IT!!!!Even though temperatures were in the nineties and thunderstorms were predicted, Chuck, Jenn, Eli, Abby and I met at the festival and immediately set about finding our favorite treats.....cuz that's what it is really all about........eating!

Eli went for a banana split and worked real hard at finishing it.  Humongous!

We stayed until the heat drained our energy and then headed to our air conditioned cars and home.  Of course I had to hit a few yard sales on the way back!  Diana

Beautiful Girls

It is so rare to meet someone who is as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. It is even rarer to meet two young ladies who are that way! But our two nieces are just that......pretty, intelligent, kind, funny......a pleasure to be around. We only wish we lived closer to them so we could see them more. For now we have to settle for occasionally trips from one side of the country to the other.

Brittany.

We love you girls and can't wait to see you again.
